Skaftafell Campsite and Food: The Convenient Stop on Iceland's Glacier Coast

Skaftafell was the most convenient campsite of our Iceland loop. It put us close to the glacier-country walks, had clean and spacious bathroom facilities, and gave us food options without another long drive after a day outdoors.

Why it worked so well
The location made sense after the South Coast and before continuing toward Jökulsárlón and the Eastfjords. The campsite was large, but the powered and non-powered areas were not the same, so ask specifically for electricity if the van needs shore power.

During our visit, food trucks were available and the restaurant at the visitor center offered another option. That mattered because the camper-van kitchen is useful, but after walking near the glacier, a ready meal and a proper bathroom felt worth paying for.
Arrival advice
If electricity matters, arrive early and ask at check-in. Bring a simple dinner plan in case the food options are closed or busy, and confirm current opening dates and facilities before setting out. The campsite is a practical base, not a substitute for checking weather and trail conditions.
