For our counter-clockwise loop, the specific stop was Secret Lagoon, also known as Gamla Laugin, in Flúðir during the Golden Circle section. It was a welcome change from another trail or viewpoint: warm water, steam, and enough time to slow the day down.
The visit worked because it was a real reset in the middle of a driving day: warm geothermal water, changing facilities, and enough time to slow down before the next campsite or meal.

What is special about Secret Lagoon
Secret Lagoon is one of Iceland's oldest swimming pools and is built around a naturally warm geothermal area. The experience is more rustic and compact than a large resort spa: the pool, steam rising from the water, and surrounding geothermal features are the main attraction.
The official site calls it Gamla Laugin and describes the pool as Iceland's oldest swimming pool. It is located near Fludir, making it a natural add-on to a Golden Circle day rather than a remote detour.

Our September 29 receipt shows a total admission charge of 7,200 kr for two adults. Prices change, so treat that as our trip record rather than a current quote.
Admission included access to the changing and shower facilities. The on-site information also listed swimsuit and towel rental, which can be useful if the bath is a spontaneous stop. Bring a swimsuit, towel, dry clothes, and a waterproof bag for small items.

The best place in the day
We would place Secret Lagoon after the main Golden Circle sights and before the evening meal. That order gives the bath a purpose: it is not something squeezed between two viewpoints, but the point where the driving day changes pace.
For a camper van, plan enough time to change, soak, shower, and get warm again before driving. If the weather is cold or windy, do not treat the parking lot and the walk back to the van as an afterthought. Keep dry layers ready.
Food after the bath
A hot bath makes a simple meal feel better. In the van, that could be soup, bread, eggs, or leftovers that are easy to heat. If you want a restaurant meal, Fludir and the surrounding Golden Circle route are better places to plan it than waiting until you are tired and hungry late at night.

Secret Lagoon was worth treating as a real stop, not a generic “Iceland hot spring” idea. The warm pool, the geothermal setting, and the chance to eat afterward made it one of the most practical recovery breaks on the loop.
