Surviving Golden Week on a Budget
Golden Week is Japan's biggest holiday stretch, and prices spike. Here's how to keep costs down:
Book accommodation early — Hostel dorms that normally run ¥3,000/night (~$20 USD) can double during Golden Week. Book 2–3 months ahead.
Avoid domestic travel — Trains and flights within Japan are packed and pricey. Stay in Tokyo and explore neighborhoods you haven't seen yet.
Eat at konbini — Convenience stores like 7-Eleven and Lawson sell onigiri (¥120–200), bento boxes (¥400–600), and fresh sandwiches. No shame in it — locals eat konbini food constantly.
Free festivals — Golden Week brings free events across the city. Check local listings for matsuri (festivals), outdoor concerts, and temple celebrations.

A realistic spring day in Tokyo on a budget:
- Hostel dorm: ¥3,000–4,500 (~$20–30 USD)

Timing Tips
Cherry blossoms typically peak between March 25 and April 5, but it shifts yearly. Check the Japan Meteorological Corporation's sakura forecast closer to your trip. If you arrive a week early, plum blossoms at Yushima Tenjin shrine are a beautiful consolation prize.
For Golden Week, the busiest days are May 3–5. If you can shift your trip to overlap with late sakura (early April) instead, you'll dodge the worst crowds and save on accommodation.
