I Stayed in Apgujeong on My First Seoul Trip — and It Surprised Me

On my first trip to Seoul, I stayed in Apgujeong and ended up liking the area much more than I expected. I originally thought it would just be a convenient Gangnam location — somewhere to sleep between sightseeing days. But it turned out to be one of the most comfortable neighborhoods for restaurants, cafés, shopping, beauty clinics, and easy daily travel.

If you are visiting Seoul for the first time and want a stylish but practical base — especially if you are interested in skincare, beauty treatments, or plastic surgery tourism — Apgujeong is worth considering.

This is not a "cheapest area in Seoul" guide. Apgujeong is not budget. But for what you get — comfort, food quality, walkability, and convenience for beauty/medical trips — it can be better value than you expect.

Where Is Apgujeong, and What Kind of Area Is It?

Apgujeong is in Gangnam-gu, one of Seoul's more upscale districts. It connects well with Apgujeong Rodeo, Cheongdam, Sinsa, Garosu-gil, and other stylish shopping and restaurant areas.

Apgujeong Rodeo Street is officially described as a fashion and culture street with luxury brands, cafés, restaurants, and trend-focused shops. But the area around it is also full of smaller local restaurants, dessert shops, and everyday convenience stores.

The key difference from tourist-heavy areas like Myeongdong: Apgujeong feels less like a tourist checklist area and more like a local upscale lifestyle area. People live here. They eat here every day. The restaurants are not optimized for tourists — they are optimized for locals who care about food.

That is the emotional hook. You feel like you are living in Seoul, not just visiting it.

Why I Liked Staying in Apgujeong

Restaurants everywhere

You do not need to go far every night to find good food. Within a 5–10 minute walk from most Apgujeong hotels, you will find Korean BBQ, Japanese restaurants, Italian places, cafés, and late-night options. This matters a lot after a long day of sightseeing, shopping, or medical appointments.

Lots of cafés and dessert shops

Good for slow mornings, working on travel plans, waiting between appointments, or relaxing after shopping. Seoul's café culture is strong everywhere, but Apgujeong has a particularly high density of well-designed, comfortable spots.

Shopping is easy

You have street shops, fashion boutiques, department store access (Galleria), beauty stores, and nearby luxury shopping in Cheongdam. You do not need to take the subway to go shopping — it is all walkable.

It feels cleaner, calmer, and more premium

Compared to Myeongdong or crowded market zones, Apgujeong streets are wider, quieter, and better maintained. This is not a criticism of other areas — it is just a different vibe. If you prefer a calmer base, this works.

Great for repeat short walks

For travelers recovering from cosmetic procedures, this matters. You may not want long subway transfers every day. Being able to walk 5 minutes to food, a pharmacy, or a convenience store is genuinely useful during recovery.

Why Apgujeong Works So Well for Plastic Surgery Tourists

Gangnam has an official Gangnam Medical Tour Center, located at 161 Apgujeong-ro. It provides support for foreign medical tourists, including information, hospital reservations, interpretation services, hotel reservations, and airport pickup support.

For plastic surgery tourists, location matters differently than for regular travelers. You may care about:

• Easy taxi rides to clinics (most Gangnam clinics are 5–15 minutes away)
• Short walks to food after appointments
• Quiet hotel recovery time
• Nearby pharmacies and convenience stores
• Cafés for companions who need to wait
• Clinics with foreign-patient support nearby
• Not needing to cross the city after appointments

Apgujeong and nearby Gangnam areas are convenient for consultations, follow-up appointments, skincare clinics, recovery-friendly hotels, and easy dining. The neighborhood is also more comfortable for companions who need to shop, eat, or wait nearby while the patient has appointments.

My opinion: for a first Seoul trip, Myeongdong may be easier for classic sightseeing. But if your trip is more food, shopping, beauty, skincare, or plastic surgery focused, Apgujeong may feel better.

What to Do in and Around Apgujeong

You do not need a packed itinerary. The area rewards slow exploration.

Apgujeong Rodeo Street — Fashion, cafés, restaurants, people-watching. The main strip has a mix of Korean and international brands, with side streets hiding excellent small restaurants.

Galleria Department Store area — Luxury shopping and premium food options. The food hall in the basement is worth visiting even if you are not shopping.

Cheongdam Fashion Street — Upscale boutiques and luxury vibe. A short walk from Apgujeong Rodeo.

Sinsa / Garosu-gil — Cafés, boutiques, casual walking. One of Seoul's most pleasant tree-lined streets. About 10 minutes by taxi or a longer walk.

Gangnam Medical Tour Center — Useful for visitors researching medical tourism support. Free consultation and information services for foreign visitors.

What Kind of Traveler Should Stay in Apgujeong?

Apgujeong is good for:

• First-time visitors who do not want to stay in the most touristy area
• Couples
• Food-focused travelers
• Shopping-focused travelers
• Skincare and beauty tourists
• Plastic surgery tourists
• Travelers who prefer a cleaner, premium neighborhood feel
• People who plan to use taxis more than subways

Apgujeong may not be best for:

• Strict budget backpackers
• People who want palace/history sites right outside the hotel
• Travelers who want late-night party streets (Hongdae is better)
• People who want the easiest airport-train connection (Myeongdong/Seoul Station is better)

Where to Stay in Apgujeong

Best for plastic surgery tourists: Hotels close to clinic clusters with elevator access, quiet rooms, fridge, pharmacy/convenience store nearby, and easy taxi pickup.

Best for first-time Seoul visitors: Near Apgujeong Rodeo Station or Apgujeong Station for easy subway access.

Best for shopping and restaurants: Near Apgujeong Rodeo / Galleria area.

Best for a quieter stay: Slightly away from the main Rodeo street, toward the residential blocks.

My Honest Pros and Cons

Pros:

• Excellent restaurants within walking distance
• Stylish cafés everywhere
• Great shopping without needing the subway
• Beauty and skincare clinics nearby
• Polished, comfortable neighborhood feel
• Good for recovery after cosmetic procedures
• Feels more local than tourist areas

Cons:

• More expensive than budget areas like Hongdae or Dongdaemun
• Some places feel upscale rather than casual
• Not the most central location for old Seoul attractions (Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Insadong are across the river)
• Subway access is fine but not as connected as Myeongdong or Seoul Station
• Can feel quiet at night compared to Hongdae

Final Verdict

After staying in Apgujeong on my first Seoul trip, I would absolutely consider staying there again. It may not be the cheapest or most traditional Seoul neighborhood, but for food, shopping, cafés, comfort, and beauty/medical tourism convenience, it is one of the best areas to consider — especially if you want a trip that feels more local-stylish than tourist-busy.

If your Seoul trip is about palaces and history, stay near Jongno. If it is about nightlife, stay in Hongdae. But if it is about eating well, shopping well, looking good, and recovering comfortably — Apgujeong is hard to beat.
