Must-Try Dishes

Pastéis de Nata — Flaky custard tarts best enjoyed warm from Pastéis de Belém or Manteigaria. About €1.20 each.

Bacalhau — Salt cod prepared in dozens of ways. Try bacalhau à brás (shredded cod with eggs and potatoes).

Bifana — A pork sandwich in a crusty roll, found at any local café for €2–3.

Grilled Sardines — A summer staple, especially during the June festivals.

Where to Eat on a Budget

Tascas (traditional taverns) in Mouraria and Alfama serve full meals for €8–12. Time Out Market offers variety but at slightly higher prices. Lunch menus (menu do dia) are the best deal at €7–10 for soup, main, drink, and coffee.

Food Market Tips

Visit Mercado da Ribeira early in the morning for fresh produce, or the Time Out Market side for prepared food from top Lisbon chefs.
