Saigon Street Food: Eat Like a Local for Almost Nothing

Ho Chi Minh City's street food scene is relentless in the best way. Every alley, sidewalk, and market corner has someone cooking something incredible over a charcoal grill or bubbling pot. Southern Vietnamese food is sweeter and more herbaceous than the north, and the portions are generous. You can eat three full meals a day for under 200,000 VND (~$8 USD).

Must-Try Dishes

Banh Mi โ€” Saigon arguably makes the best banh mi in Vietnam. Crispy baguette, pรขtรฉ, grilled pork, pickled daikon, fresh cilantro, and chili. Just 15,000โ€“30,000 VND (~$0.60โ€“1.20 USD). Banh Mi Huynh Hoa in District 1 is legendary (45,000 VND for a loaded sandwich).

Com Tam (Broken Rice) โ€” The signature Saigon dish. Broken rice topped with grilled pork chop, shredded pork skin, a fried egg, and fish sauce. A full plate costs 35,000โ€“55,000 VND (~$1.40โ€“2.20 USD).

Pho โ€” Southern pho is sweeter than Hanoi's version, with more herbs and bean sprouts on the side. A bowl runs 40,000โ€“60,000 VND (~$1.60โ€“2.40 USD).

Banh Xeo โ€” Crispy Vietnamese crepes filled with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts. Wrap pieces in lettuce and herbs, dip in nuoc cham sauce. About 30,000โ€“50,000 VND (~$1.20โ€“2 USD).

Hu Tieu โ€” A southern noodle soup with pork, shrimp, and a clear, sweet broth. Often served with a side of herbs taller than the bowl. Around 35,000โ€“50,000 VND (~$1.40โ€“2 USD).

Che โ€” Vietnamese sweet desserts made with beans, jelly, coconut milk, and crushed ice. Dozens of varieties, all around 15,000โ€“25,000 VND (~$0.60โ€“1 USD).

Best Areas to Eat

Ben Thanh Night Market โ€” The stalls outside Ben Thanh Market come alive after dark. Grilled seafood, banh xeo, and fresh fruit smoothies at tourist-friendly prices (slightly higher than local spots but still cheap).

District 4 โ€” Cross the bridge from District 1 for some of the city's best and cheapest street food. Banh mi, com tam, and hu tieu stalls line every block.

Binh Thanh (Vinh Khanh Street) โ€” Known as "Seafood Street." Grilled shellfish, snails, and clams served with cold beer. A full seafood spread costs 150,000โ€“250,000 VND (~$6โ€“10 USD) per person.

District 3 โ€” A local neighborhood with excellent com tam shops and coffee spots. Less touristy, more authentic, same low prices.

Budget Tips

Morning markets โ€” Local wet markets have the freshest and cheapest food stalls. Go before 8 AM for the best selection.

Ca phe sua da โ€” Vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk costs 15,000โ€“25,000 VND (~$0.60โ€“1 USD) at street stalls. Skip the trendy cafรฉs and drink where locals drink.

Bia hoi โ€” Fresh draft beer for 10,000โ€“15,000 VND (~$0.40โ€“0.60 USD) per glass. Slightly more expensive than Hanoi but still the cheapest beer you'll find anywhere.

Daily food budget โ€” Three meals, snacks, coffee, and a beer: 150,000โ€“250,000 VND/day (~$6โ€“10 USD). Saigon is a street food paradise that won't dent your wallet.

Eating Etiquette

Most street food stalls have a specific dish โ€” don't ask for a menu, just sit down and you'll get what they make. Wet wipes and tissues are essential (not all stalls provide napkins). Tipping isn't expected at street stalls. And if you see a queue of locals, join it โ€” that's the best recommendation you'll get.
