Where to Stay on a Budget

District 3 — A more local neighborhood with cheaper accommodation and excellent street food. Private rooms start at 250,000–400,000 VND (~$10–16 USD).

Must-See Sights

War Remnants Museum — A powerful, sobering museum documenting the Vietnam War. Entry 40,000 VND (~$1.60 USD). Allow 2–3 hours.

Reunification Palace — The former presidential palace where a tank crashed through the gates in 1975. Entry 65,000 VND (~$2.60 USD). The retro interiors are fascinating.

Ben Thanh Market — A massive covered market selling everything from souvenirs to street food. Haggle hard — start at 40% of the asking price. The night market outside is cheaper and more fun.

Notre-Dame Cathedral & Central Post Office — Two French colonial landmarks side by side. Free to admire from outside (the cathedral is under renovation). The post office interior is gorgeous.

Cu Chi Tunnels (half-day trip) — The famous Viet Cong tunnel network, 70 km northwest. Budget tours run 200,000–300,000 VND (~$8–12 USD) including transport. A must-do.

Getting Around

Grab — The Southeast Asian ride-hailing app. Motorbike rides across the city cost 15,000–40,000 VND (~$0.60–1.60 USD). Cars cost 2–3x more but are still cheap.

City bus — Routes cover most of the city for 5,000–7,000 VND (~$0.20–0.28 USD) per ride. Bus 109 runs from the airport to the city center.

Walking — District 1 is walkable, but crossing the street takes practice. Walk slowly and steadily — the motorbikes will flow around you. Don't stop suddenly.
